GOAL
UPDATE: The messageboard I set up is now cleared for non-registered users--much more convenient now.
Today is the start of the World Cup, which you should know unless you live underground or on another planet. Or, if you're an American and you are so into instant gratification that you cannot understand the appeal of a game that in its dual simplicity and complexity is, quite literally, the great sport the world has ever seen.
If you don't get exciting watching the imagination at play when, say, the Czech Republic gets near the opponent's net. If you don't stand in awe of the individual and team skills on display, the pageantry, the utter jubilant wonderful chaos of World Cup...well, then, you probably won't want to talk about World Cup on the message board thread I've set up here.
But, if you do, come join the discussion. I'll be checking the discussion and the games almost every day, despite my schedule. (One year I had the pleasure of watching every single game live. This year, no so much.)
Anyway, World Cup is here. It's gonna be awesome.

Just added a note of anticipation to the thread, Jeff. I cannae wait!
On a note of interest. We held the office sweepstake today - and I drew USA!
The BBC are screening all of their games live on the Internet, but you'll probably need a proxy server in the UK to watch them. No idea about quality. I'm planning to watch the opening game online to see what it is like.
So, whose side are you on in the Great Roonster Controversy, Smarmy Sven or Furious Fergie?
Neil:
Re the sweepstake--you poor bastard.
Cheryl--I will investigate and go from there.

Jeff - it could have been a lot worse. Don't fancy many of the African teams this year - except Ivory Coast, but they've got a really tough group.
Having said that, Ghana won't be a pushover either, and USA, sadly, I think will be doing admirally not to finish bottom of their group.
Well, so much for that. The BBC have clearly massively underestimated the bandwidth they'd need for the service. It is sick as a parrot, Brian.
OK, got through at last. Missed twenty minutes of play and three goals. Unbelievable. The quality of the video is, um, questionable, particularly following the ball at speed, but you can at least see what Motty is talking about.
Hexa! HEXA!! Go Seleção!!!
Ahum... Can't really wait for the 12th and the opening against Croatia. Got the shirt, got the headgear, got the bottle of Cachaça Mucambo. All set, methinks.
Loads of varied opinions at last night's SF-meeting in Helsinki. Far too many German-fans (including my fair lady), couple of Engerlanders and the odd French-a-roonie. And us yellow, gree & blue's.
Seleção Brasileira!!!
Hi, a fat old man can win at golf, so it's not really a sport.
