One name that needs to be mentioned here is Shaun Tan. And it's not just because he's a mate. :) He doesn't appear to have a web site, which is a shame, but some of his work, and links to more, can be seen here:

Don't hate him just because he's not from the Eastern States. Hate him because he's so damn talented. :)
One great book, not all that old, was Neil Curtis' "Bear Dinkum" - about a macho koala bear who starts a Grand Ballet Frappe called MEN AT WORK. They trash the Sydney Opera House in their first performance in that hallowed place.
The illustrations and story are very funny. I would post pictures if I could.

Ditto ditto ditto about Shaun Tan. Let me say it again. Shaun Tan, Shaun Tan, Shaun Tan.
Several of his picture books are available in the US. Check out Amazon. They are truly amazing.
Look for such titles as The Rabbits (words by John Marsden). It's an allegory in which rabbits stand in for Europeans. Also, The Lost Thing, The Red Tree, Memorial (words by Gary Crew), and all the others. They are absolutely amazing.
